The coat of many colours is back and as splendid as ever in this touring production of the show that launched Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s careers.
The show has its roots in a musical for children and this production keeps that family-friendly vibe, with a story accessible to anyone and an emphasis on entertainment.
There are a few subtle modernising twists to its 60s and 70s roots, but it preserves the high fun quota that comes from the witty lyrics, broad range of musical pastiche, and the intensely colourful set and costumes.
Adam Filipe takes the title role, with a powerful and considered performance of Close Every Door, and a charming rendition of Any Dream Will Do. Christina Bianco tries a little too hard in a slightly beefed-up narrator role, but there is no faulting her vocals. Alex Woodward rounds off the main cast with an entertaining cameo as the Pharoah, taking it full Vegas.
Many of the best moments come from the younger cast members and ensemble, especially in Potiphar and Those Canaan Days.
Morgan Large’s set and costumes are as enjoyable as the live music, with the Egypt scenes especially providing a visual feast.
It feels a quick two hours, with the sheer spectacle carrying you along with its brash and sometimes bizarre songs and story; it’s great to sit back and enjoy the ride.
