A festival of Indian music will see two concerts at Norwich’s St Andrews Hall as part of a returning festival.
The Kala Festival on 19 September 2026 will open with Tabla Solo by Ustad Akram Khan, for an afternoon concert starting at midday.
Ustad Akram Khan, a seventh-generation master of the Ajrara gharana will perform a tabla solo that promises to shifts seamlessly from whisper-soft textures of slow beats to thunderous cascades of fast rhythmic patterns.
Supporting him is the rising sarangi virtuoso Satwinder Pal Singh. He has been playing the sarangi since a very early age.
The evening slot will feature a concert bridging the ancient traditions of Indian classical music with the expressive freedom of Western guitar playing.
Slide & Strum on The Mystic Frets begins at 6.30pm and will feature a collaboration between artists from different musical worlds: Indian slide guitar maestro Pandit Debasis Chakroborty, visiting from Agra; guitarist Giuliano Modarelli from the UK; Sam Evans on tabla from Australia; and RN Prakash on ghatam.
In this concert, the soulful, meditative voice of the Indian slide guitar will converse with the rich harmonies and techniques of the Western guitar, elegantly supported by the rhythmic brilliance of the tabla.
The festival is returning to Norwich after a successful concert at the Assembly House in 2025.
