Parody meets en pointe perfection in this softly satirical take on classical ballet, now in its 50th year.
The Trocks started in New York but now tour internationally, with this latest UK outing supported by the Dance Consortium collection of the theatres, including Norwich Theatre Royal.
The first nod to something not being quite as traditional as you might expect from a night at the ballet is the opening announcement, with danseur names like Holly Dey-Abroad and Jacques d’Aniels giving a clue not to take things seriously. You probably should believe the programme notes either (“new(neo)
neo-new classic dance” anyone?)

For the next couple of hours, we’re treated to several silly jokes at the expense of the prima donnas who endure the tutus for our entertainment, with missed audio cues, awkward lifts, even more awkward waves out to the audience, and occasional outbreaks of patter-cake mid movement.
Whether you’re a dance afficionado or a total newbie, there are plenty of sight gags to entertain, including their signature version of the Dying Swan, complete with exaggerated curtain call.
But what really impresses is that this is funny, but also formidable. The all male company is an exceptionally strong set of dancers, who – when not deliberately falling over each other – dance to perfection, including some audacious fouettés and plenty of en pointe.
Even without the jokes, it’s a masterclass in dance that demonstrates the affection behind the foolery. With them, it’s just that extra bit delightful.
- Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo continues at Norwich Theatre Royal until Saturday 6 June 2026, then touring nationally. Tickets £10.60-£46.53.
