A new musical premiering in Norwich is putting Shakespeare in space, with a ‘space-Viking-rock-opera’ take on Hamlet.
Open Door Theatre Company’s Space Hamlet will premiere at Norwich Puppet Theatre on August 5 2025 for a four-night run.
The show catapults the timeless tale of Prince Hamlet into a dazzling distant future, where the Denmark System is ruled by space Vikings and epic battles play out among the stars. After the murder of his father, King Ham, young Prince Hamlet embarks on a cosmic quest for vengeance against his uncle Claudius, in a universe brimming with adventure, intrigue and betrayal.
The show is set to feature an original glam rock musical score, a cast of eight actors, giant space monsters and puppets.
Space Hamlet is the second musical from UK-based Daniel Sturman (music, lyrics, and co-author) and US-based R.C. Staab (co-author) who have been collaborating over the internet since 2009. Their first show, Zombie Wedding, premiered at the NYC Fringe Festival and subsequently produced in the UK at the Gorleston Pavilion Theatre.
Open Door Theatre’s debut show, also by Sturman, was Yippee-ki-Yay: The Musical for the Die-Hard Fans.
